rayDr. Moses A. Ray

Dr. Moses A. Ray was born in Clinton, NC in 1920. He graduated from Shaw University before going on to earn his doctorate in Dentistry from Howard University. He came to Tarboro in 1946 to open a dental practice and quickly became involved in his community. Dr. Ray helped establish the Edgecombe Credit Union for African Americans in 1955. He was elected to the Tarboro Town Council and became the first post reconstruction African-American mayor of Tarboro, a position he held from 1987 until his death in 1995. During his tenure as Mayor, Tarboro earned the All-American City designation. Dr. Ray has also been awarded the Governor’s Golden Leaf Award.
