Dred Wimberly
Born in 1848 on Walnut Plantation in Edgecombe County, a slave to the Battle family, Dred Wimberly chose to continue to work for the Battle family after the Civil War. He managed the Walnut Creek farm in Edgecombe County and later moved to Rocky Mount where he was a carpenter. Mr. Wimberly married his first wife, Kizziah, in 1870 and had five children. He married Ella Jenkins in 1891 and had six children. He was elected to the North Carolina House in 1879 and in 1887 and to the North Carolina Senate in 1889. A supporter of highways and of education, he voted to establish the NC Agricultural and Mechanical School (NC State).
