Rocky Mount native Fred Turnage was educated in the Rocky Mount City Schools and at Wake Forest University where he earned his B.S. Degree and J.D. Degree. He was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1961 and has practiced law in Rocky Mount for over 40 years. Mr. Turnage was elected to the Rocky Mount City Council in 1971. In 1973 he was elected Mayor of Rocky Mount. He was elected nine times as Mayor and retired in 2008. Mr. Turnage has served as Chair or President of various community boards and organizations on the local and state levels and has been invited to serve on national task forces by the Carter and the Reagan administrations.
