Gus H. Tulloss
Augustus (Gus) Harrison Tulloss, is a life-long resident, local businessman, and civic leader of Rocky Mount, NC. As the owner of Tulloss Insurance Agency since 1989, he distinguished himself in the Rocky Mount and regional community by serving through his business and volunteer work. Tulloss attended East Carolina University and graduated in 1966 with a BS in Business Administration.
His integrity and commitment is reflected in the many honors bestowed on him over the years. In Tulloss was named “One of the Five Outstanding Men in North Carolina” in 1974, an Honoree of the East Carolina University Alumni of the Year Award, received the East Carolina Boy Scout Distinguished Service award in 2005 and Rocky Mount Chamber’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year award in 2016.
Tulloss was appointed in 2008 by Governor Mike Easley to represent Highway Division Four on the North Carolina Board of Transportation. He was re-appointed by Governors Bev Perdue, Pat McCrory, and Roy Cooper. He served on the state Board for 12 years and retired from the Board in July 2020.
In 2021, The Rocky Mount City Council requested the North Carolina Department of Transportation name the bridge on Sunset Avenue crossing Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount the Gus H. Tulloss Bridge to signify and honor his contributions to the citizens of Rocky Mount, Highway Division Four, and the State of North Carolina.
In September 2021, Tulloss returned to state board service as North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore appointed him to the North Carolina Ports Authority.
