Helen Parker Gay
Helen Parker Gay was the first African-American woman elected to the Rocky Mount City Council where she served for 20 years. Mrs. Gay attended Rocky Mount schools, graduated from Barber-Scotia College and continued her education at NC State. She was employed for 37 years by the Employment Security Commission and set up the Household Training Institute. She has been active in various community programs – serving on the board of the Carolinas Gateway Partnership, Board of Visitors for NC Wesleyan and as an active member of the Rocky Mount Luncheon Rotary Club, Nash County Development Commission and Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce. On the state level she served on the NC Business Council of Management and Development.
