Jacobus “Jim” Thorpe
Olympic gold medalist Jacobus “Jim” Thorpe was born in Oklahoma Indian Territory. He is the only person ever to win both the Olympic Pentathlon and the Decathlon. He holds the as yet unbroken scoring record for a single intercollegiate football season (198 points) while making 25 touchdowns, another as yet unsurpassed total. He also played major league baseball and professional football, for which he was the first premier player. Mr. Thorpe served as Professional Football’s first President. Mr. Thorpe played baseball for a Rocky Mount minor league team before his appearance in the 1912 Olympics. He died in 1953.
