Thomas H. Battle
Thomas Hall Battle, community builder, was incorporator of the Village of Rocky Mount Mills, an organizer and President of Rocky Mount’s first bank, the National Bank of Rocky Mount. He served as Mayor from 1886-1896, on the Board of Aldermen from 1896 until 1917 and, while an alderman, served for ten years as Chairman of the City’s Finance Committee during the time the City embarked on becoming a public utility. With others he chartered, and served as first Chairman of the Board of Rocky Mount Graded Schools. He was one of the organizers and first president of the North Carolina Bankers Association in 1896. Mr. Battle served as President of the Board of Trustees of Thomas Hackney Braswell Memorial Library its first 12 years. He helped organize the Rocky Mount Cotillion Club about 1886 and was serving as president when the first June German was held.
