Tom Suiter
Rocky Mount native Tom Suiter graduated from Erskine College in South Carolina in 1971 and joined the staff of WRAL-TV in Raleigh as a sports reporter. In 1981, he became the sports anchor and began two long-lasting series, Football Friday which focuses on high school football games around the state, and the Extra Effort Award. Mr. Suiter has received 17 Emmy nominations, winning twice, and has received numerous Associated and United Press awards. In 1987, he was recognized by Radio-TV magazine as one of the 3 best sports broadcasters in the nation. He also received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2008. In 2008, he retired as the sports anchor for the 6 o’clock news team, but continued to broadcast Football Friday and to present the weekly Extra Effort Award.
