“Milton P. Fields of Rocky Mount, my law partner of 18 years and my friend for life, passed away today at 95. I told him yesterday how much he meant to my family and me. He was a skilled attorney and he taught me about the law, but also about friendship, character, integrity, vision, humor and joy. His witty stories made you both laugh and think, just like his popular newspaper columns. He made a real difference in countless lives and he richly deserved his induction into the Twin County Hall of Fame. He deeply loved Lea, his wife of 71 years, his children and their families and everyday people. Because of his love of sailing and his quiet leadership, I called him “Captain.” See you on the other shore, Captain Fields.”
